Why I Keep Comparing Nylon and Polyester

Cost and Supply Chain Reality

This one's more straightforward, but there's a catch.

Polyester costs less to produce. Its raw material pricing is more stable. Nylon is tied to caprolactam and crude oil markets, so it fluctuates more. In our purchase history, comparable-weight nylon fabric runs about 15–25% higher than polyester.

But here's the thing — unit price isn't total cost.

We ran a full polyester conversion in 2022 to cut costs. Six months later, we were replacing certain items at roughly double the frequency. The annualized cost ended up higher than our previous nylon-blend program. That was a painful lesson to explain to finance.

Scrubs (Standard Textile Scrub Lines)

Nylon blends win for high-wash, high-wear departments — ER, surgery, ICU. Polyester performs better for administrative and lower-acuity settings where quick-drying and light weight matter more than abrasion resistance.

Blankets and Bedding

Polyester-cotton blends offer the best balance of softness, drying speed, and cost. Pure nylon blankets feel more luxurious but require longer drying cycles. Towels and Warming Equipment

So Which One Should You Choose?

After five years, here's the framework I use:

  • Choose nylon when: abrasion resistance, frequent washing, strength, and long lifecycle matter most. Scrubs, medical linens, heavy-use upholstery.
  • Choose polyester when: quick-drying, UV resistance, moisture wicking, and cost efficiency matter most. Blankets, towels, curtains, outdoor fabrics.
  • Choose a blend when: you need the best of both. Most commercial applications benefit from a nylon-polyester or polyester-cotton blend rather than a single fiber.

One more thing — regardless of which fiber you choose, verify three things before you commit:

  1. Certification and compliance documentation (OEKO-TEX, ISO, or industry-specific standards)
  2. Consistency between sample and production batch (weight, color, finish)
  3. Supplier lead time reliability during peak season

I created a 12-point checklist after my third vendor mistake. It's saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework and returns. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction every single time.

This worked for us, but our situation is a mid-size company with predictable ordering patterns across three locations.
